Morges Fete de la Tulipe, Switzerland (Suisse) - 75 photos + 5 tips to take great flower pictures

Tulip Festival - 40 years and 200’000 bulbs in Morges 2010 edition

The Fete de la Tulip in Morges is happening every year during March-April, for the last 40 years. Around 100’000 bulbs are seed in the Parc of Independance, where the Morges river is ending in the Geneva lake, next to the Castle. The organisators have seed 200’000 bulbs this year, which is probably one of the largest tulip festival in the world, with dozens of multi color variants. Thousands of people come visiting it every day, and depending of the weather, the flowers can last up to 5 weeks!

5 Tips to take great and spectacular flower pictures

Taking great pictures of flowers has always been one of the main reason to purchase a camera for many of us! Flower photos in the magazines and on websites always look full of colors, saturated and have a peaceful ambiance. However, when back at home, the results might not be always as expected. You don’t necessarily need an expensive macro lens, actually a zoom with fast aperture can really give dramatic effect (for info, most of the below photos have been taken with Minolta 80-200 HS G f/2.8). Here are a few tips and advises that might help you make the photos looking really gorgeous and spectacular as the 75 pictures of tulips you can see below:

  1. Shoot horizontally your flowers: many people I see taking pictures of flowers do it with a vertical angle, standing right in front of it. This gives no perspective to the flowers, and you will have very flat render. You need to get yourself at the same level as the flowers, and shoot on a horizontal perspective your subject, like doing portrait. You might have to be on your knees most of the time, so be prepared and do not wear a white trouser!
  2. Arrange the scene to be spectacular with a clean background: have a flower in focus and play around it (rule of third, diagonal…), especially if you have a clean and bright background this will help you a lot to emphasize the scene and glorify it.
  3. Play with zoom, DOF and light: you need to masterize the aperture of your lens, which will blur the background and help you realize the tip #2. Macro lens or tele-zoom (starting at 70mm) might really help you here, and to get great perspective don’t hesitate to go up to the maximum of your lens (200-300mm). Make sure your subject (the flower!) is sufficiently lightened so the render will be even more spectacular. Be careful of too bright light, especially on white flowers, it will just burn the petals.
  4. Look around you to compose the scene: flowers are beautiful, and most of the time deserve to be the only subject of the photo. However do not forget that what’s around you might also give fantastic scene, where the flower will just be an element that will sublimate the overall picture, being on the first or secondary plan.
  5. Do not over saturate the final results: make sure when finalising the render on your computer that the flower colors are not over saturated (red and orange are typically the most sensitive), and that you still have enough details in the the white petals.

Lac de Tanay, Swiss Alps, Valais, Switzerland

Lac de Tanay, Valais

The lake of Tanay is a typical postcard place of the Swiss Alps not so far from Lausanne, which you can reach after a 1h walk in the mountain, with a strong slope. However, once arrived, you will have a very nice and peaceful view, with the mountains reflecting on the green water of the small lake. Its altitude is situated at 1’408m above the sea, or 1’100m above the Leman Lake (Geneva Lake). There are a few restaurants, bed and breakfast, chalet for rent (day or week) and a camping. An ideal place to spend a day or an afternoon!

Evolene, Val d'Herens, Valais, Switzerland (Suisse) - Winter landscape pictures of traditional Swiss Alps village

Evolene, Val d’Hérens, a traditional Swiss Alps village

We went to Evolène, in the Val d’Hérens a very touritic and traditional valley in the Swiss Alps, close to Sion (Valais capital). There are 2 peaks above 4’000m (Dent Blanche, 4’357m and Dent d’Hérens, 4’171m), as well as some glaciers. The valley is composed of few famous places: Evolène, Arolla, les Haudères, Hérémence, Vex, Nax and the Grande Dixence.

The villages have very typical and traditional chalets, and the Sunday morning life is a nice moment for the locals to gather and drink some hot wine while listening folkloric music. Evolène is actually the 4th largest town in Switzerland, not by its population (1’650 inhabitants only) but by its area. There are a few ski resorts and you can also practice nordic ski, while enjoying a great fondue on the evening!

Reed on the Geneva Lake, Switzerland

Reed plant

A simple picture of a reed plant on the Geneva Lake (Lac Léman). I particularly liked the soft and subtle tones of grey and sand colors that the plant had in this cold winter weather.

BMW Headquarters and Museum, Munich, Bavaria - Germany

BMW Headquarters

The BMW headquarters in Munich is one ofthe place to see when going in Bavaria. Innagurated in 1972 (during the 1972 Munchen Summer Olympic Games) is now the official headquarter for the car manufacturer over the last 40 years. It’s now registred as a historical building since 1999. The main tower consists of 4 cylinders, suspended in the air attached to the main structure. It has BMW branded badges on the top of the building, which has 22 floors (18 are office spaces). The building was also shot during the movie Rollerblade, where they remove the BMW badge (same during the Olympic Games).

Swiss Alps Wallpapers

I’ve already posted the pictures some times ago, however I’ve decided to now offer 5 wallpapers version of each picture in 7 different sizes, as usually on JHG Photography, from 1024x768 up to wide size of 2560x1440! That should fit very well your new iMac 27” you’ve probably received at Christmas!

The Forclaz is a mountain pass in Valais (Switzerland canton famous for its ski ressorts of Verbier, Zermatt, Crans Montana, Nendaz and many others!), close to the city of Martigny and taking you eventually to the Emosson Dam and lake. It goes from 471m to 1’527m of altitude, situated in Switzerland and ends in France in Chamonix. It’s actually a very nice location, typical of the traditional postcard mountain landscapes of Switzerland.

Starting the new year with a new design!

I had a bit enough of my previous website design, which was too dark… like 2009 actually! Therefore, I’ve spent an hour tweaking completly the design to get to this quite minimalist and modern layout which I hope you will find easy to go through. I’ve tried to design the site to make it much more fresh and light to load and to read through the entries. White background actually conveys pretty well the simplicity, while the previous black side panels with baroque background were a bit too much probably.

This also shows how great is Squarespace and how easy it is to tweak the website so rapidly and so dramatically. I’m using it since more than a year, and I’m satisfied of it. If you’re looking after web hosting and powerful creative system to blog about anything, then Squarespace is the right offer for you. In less than 5 minutes, you have your website running in a very safe and harmonious environement. You can choose between many templates and tweaks a few things to tailor to your needs. It also comes fully ready for search engines optimisation (SEO) and you can actually get your site referrenced by Google and Yahoo very rapidly. Posting on the site is a great pleasure, as you don’t need to type any codes (HTML or CSS), the render is pro whatever you do!

If you’re interested, then don’t hesitate to sign up for a free try. And if more interested, you can use my “powered by Squarespace” black button on the right panel to get some discount!

Have fun and Happy new Year!

Exterior pictures of the BMW Welt (Showroom), Olympiapark, Munich, Bavaria - Germany

BMW Welt Exterior

The BMW welt is located just next to the Olympiapark, and in front of the BMW factory and headquarter. If you’re a BMW amateur, this is really a nice place to go at least once. The exterior is also very futurist but much more sharp than the interior.

Interior pictures of the BMW Welt (Showroom), Olympiapark, Munich, Bavaria - Germany

BMW Welt Interior

I’ve posted yesterday some wallpapers of the BMW Welt in Munich, and I’d like to continue today with some more interior photo of this great architectural piece of art. As you can see, the interior is vast, very luminous and has some creative and modern curvy walls, guiding the visitor through the BMW car exhibition and the technology showcase.
